New Zealand weightlifter Laurel Hubbard is set to become the first transgender athlete to compete in the Olympics.
The New Zealand Olympic Committee has confirmed that Hubbard will be competing in the women's 87-kilogram category.
"As the New Zealand Team, we have a strong culture of manaaki and inclusion and respect for all. We are committed to supporting all eligible New Zealand athletes and ensuring their mental and physical wellbeing," said CEO Kereyn Smith.
Hubbard was confirmed to be eligible for this year’s Olympics after meeting the IWF and IOC eligibility criteria, after having competed in men’s weightlifting competitions before transitioning in 2013.
