Methane on Mars! The scientists smelt it, but who dealt it?

A group of scientists may have found the location on Mars of a mysterious source of methane gas – and now they’ve smelt it the big question is, of course, who dealt it.

The pungent-smelling gas is most often produced by microbes — and NASA’s Curiosity rover could be right on top of it.

Methane traces have been detected Curiosity six times since the rover landed in Mars’ Gale crater in 2012, but scientists weren’t able to find a source. Now, researchers believe they may have traced the methane ‘burps’ to their origin.

It’s a thrilling moment as almost all of the methane in Earth’s atmosphere has biological origins, throwing up the possibility of finding life on the Red Planet.
