Labour’s Dawn Butler has been asked to leave the House of Commons after refusing to withdraw claims that Prime Minister Boris Johnson has ‘lied to the House and country over and over again’.
The MP for Brent Central was ordered to withdraw from the chamber by temporary deputy speaker Judith Cummins after refusing to withdraw her remarks, before repeating them several times.
It is considered not within the boundaries of parliamentary etiquette to call another member a liar.
Members were discussing the prospect of a public inquiry into the government’s handling of the pandemic, when Ms Butler said: “It’s dangerous to lie in a pandemic. I am disappointed the Prime Minister has not come to the House to correct the record and correct the fact that he has lied to the House and the country over and over again.”
