The captain of a fishing boat had a double take when he spotted a young deer half a mile out to sea.
Mark Bowditch, 56, was on a mackerel fishing charter in Weymouth when he spotted the exhausted animal desperately paddling in 50-metre deep water.
“Initially I just thought it was a basking shark swimming slowly across the surface," he said. "Then when I got a little bit closer and it turned, I saw it had two ears!"
Mark managed to lasso the deer, which appeared to be a young Red Doe, and bring it on board the boat with the help of one of the charter guests.
