Drought in Iraqi marshes causing buffalo deaths and farmer migrations

Chibayish (Iraq) (AFP) – Some 14,000 buffaloes have perished in southern Iraq over the past four years of drought, which has hit the mythical Mesopotamian marshes listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, according to local authorities. “The animal breeders have migrated from the marshes, and whoever owns a few buffaloes has sold them,” says buffalo breeder Ahmed Bejay.
