(AFP) – For several months, torrential rains have caused rivers to overflow in Ecuador’s Los Rios province. “We haven’t been able to harvest anything this year,” says rice farmer Kelvin Chavez. The rains have affected around 25,000 hectares of crops, according to preliminary records from the Ministry of Economic and Productive Development (MDEP). Footage from mid-October shows flooded rice crops in the coastal province as farmers struggle to deal with the effects of El Nino and climate change.
