Wonsan (North Korea) (AFP) – In footage from North Korean state media KCTV, leader Kim Jong Un vows to build the country’s navy into a nuclear-armed force “in eight months time” for “deterrence purposes”, as Japan, South Korea and the United States kick off maritime drills. He makes the comments while attending the commissioning of the Kang Kon — a warship that partially capsized when launched in May 2025 — in the port city of Wonsan on September 6, alongside his daughter Ju Ae.
