The former Minneapolis police officer who murdered George Floyd is to be sentenced on Friday.
Derek Chauvin, who knelt on Floyd’s neck for nine-and-a-half minutes was found guilty on all counts two months ago after the 46 year-old’s death last year.
Chauvin's attorney reportedly filed a motion looking for a shorter sentence, perhaps even probation. But prosecutors responded with their own motion demanding a 30-year sentence.
The 45-year-old former police officer is scheduled to be sentenced on 25 June following his conviction on murder and manslaughter charges.
Judge Peter Cahill previously ruled there were aggravating factors in Floyd’s death.
He said prosecutors had proven that Chauvin had abused his position of trust and authority, treated Floyd with particular cruelty, acted in concert with at least three other people and committed his crime in the presence of children.
