8 of the quintessentially English traditions that define Wimbledon

Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and with it come some very quaint traditions.

Since the first championship in 1877, every player has had to obey a strict all-white kit rule. Off-white or cream-coloured clothing is not acceptable, nor is coloured underwear! The only exception is ‘a single trim of colour no wider than 1 cm’ on the neckline or cuff.

The Royal Family are regular spectators and watch from the exclusive Royal Box, which seats 74 people. Players must bow and curtsey to the box when entering and leaving centre court.

Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam event still played on grass. Female players are referred to as ‘Miss’ or ‘Mrs’ according to their marital status. Strawberries and cream is the food of choice for Wimbledon fans, who consume about 10,000 portions a day.
