Luke Prokop becomes first active NHL player to come out as gay

Nashville Predators' Luke Prokop has become the first active NHL player signed to a team to come out as gay.

Prokop said that he hoped the announcement would help improve gay visibility within the game. "I hope that in sharing who I am I can help other people see that gay people are welcome in the hockey community, as we work to make sure that hockey is truly for everyone," said Prokop.

The 19-year-old defenceman, who currently plays for the Calgary Hitmen in the Western Hockey League, was a pick in the third round of the 2020 NHL Draft.
