Video game music played at Olympics opening ceremony

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics Opening Ceremony featured an orchestral medley of Japanese video game music.

The medley played as athletes from around the world entered the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo, including music from video games developed by companies such as Sega, Capcom and Square Enix.

Athletes from Greece were – as is custom -the first to enter the stadium to Dragon Quest’s “Overture: Roto’s Theme”. Music from famous game series such as Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Nier and Soulcalibur also appeared in the medley. However, no music related to anything from Nintendo or Pokémon was played.
