Wildfires have ripped through Sicily forcing residents to evacuate and leaving tourists trapped as all flights were cancelled.
Images showed beach umbrellas and sunbathing chairs ablaze at the Le Capannine lido in Catania, where emergency services are battling at least 15 fires but high temperatures and warm winds were fanning the flames.
As the fire was impossible to control, hundreds of tourists had to be evacuated and all the flights were cancelled, leaving many British holidaymakers trapped on the island where Catania is the main airport.
