Even former presidents have to play by the Covid rules and so plans for a bumper 60th birthday party for Barack Obama this weekend are being scaled back.
He had been planning to draw the good and the great to the bash at Martha’s Vineyard, with George Clooney, Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey among the 475 guests expected to attend, but the Delta variant has put paid to that.
His spokeswoman, Hannah Hankins, said on Wednesday, the actual day of his birthday: “Due to the new spread of the Delta variant over the past week, the President and Mrs Obama have decided to significantly scale back the event to include only family and close friends.”
