The highest ever temperature in European history has been recorded in Italy.
Early reports suggest that temperatures in Sicily reached 48.8°C (119.84°F) during a heatwave sweeping the country. If the World Meteorological Organisation accepts the readings, it will break the previous record of 48°C (118.4°F) recorded in Athens back in 1977.
The news comes amid a heatwave that has seen huge wildfires rip through southern Europe. In Greece, thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes as the fires rage.
