Singer Gloria Estefan has revealed that she was sexually abused by a family member when she was just nine.
Estefan broke the news during an appearance on the Facebook Watch show Red Table Talk, saying that a distant relative, who owned a music school that she attended, exploited her mother’s trust and molested her.
According to Estefan, the unnamed family member threatened to kill her mother if she told her about the abuse.
“I knew the man was insane and that's why I thought he might actually hurt my mother,” said Estefan.
The singer eventually told her mother about the abuse and then reported it to the police. The police advised her not to press charges as she would ‘go through worse trauma having to get on a stand and testify’, she said.
