Gareth Southgate says it was his decision who would to take penalties

England coach Gareth Southgate said England's players must be proud of their achievements and shouldered the blame for the country suffering more penalty shootout heartache in Sunday's Euro 2021 final shootout defeat by Italy at Wembley.

Southgate said it was his decision who took the penalties and nobody ducked taking one or had the opportunity to say ‘no’.

Luke Shaw gave England a dream start with the earliest ever goal in a European Championship final inside two minutes, but Leonardo Bonucci levelled in the second half to force extra time before Southgate's men lost 3-2 on penalties.

Watch Prince William tell England to ‘bring it home'

Prince William wished England soccer ‘the very best of luck’ ahead of Sunday's match up with Italy in the Euro 2020 final.

The Duke of Cambridge posted a personal video message to the team, starting off ‘Gareth, Harry…’ before going on to wish them the very best of luck, congratulating them on their performances so far and finishing by saying ‘Bring it home’.

William, who has been at England’s previous games at Wembley, will be there again in his role as President of the Football Association.

Meanwhile, his wife Kate was at Wimbledon for the final of the men’s singles. The duchess is royal patron of the All England club

Keep calm and Harry on! Kane proud of England fightback

Harry Kane has spoken about his pride of leading England as they prepare for their first major tournament final for more than 50 years.

Kane, who scored the winner in the 2-1 victory over Denmark, said: “We stayed calm, there was no panic,” after Denmark went ahead through a stunning free-kick. It was the first goal England had conceded in the tournament.

The Spurs striker will lead the team out at Wembley on Sunday to face the Italians, hoping to emulate Bobby Moore and the rest of the England heroes who lifted the World Cup in 1966.

England fans celebrate as they dare to hope football’s ‘coming home'

It makes you wonder what on earth will happen if England overcome Italy on Sunday to win Euro 2020.

Moments after the nail-biting extra time win against Denmark England fans climbed onto buses and telephone boxes in London's Piccadilly Circus singing the Three Lions anthem ‘It’s Coming Home’.

The celebrations were repeated across the country as the national side ended a 55-year wait to reach the final of a major competition.

Now all eyes are on Wembley where England face their toughest test of the tournament, an Italian side that has already disposed of both Belgium and Spain. Hold onto your hats if football actually does ‘come home’.
