‘Unbelievable’: England supporters celebrate qualification for World Cup semis

London (AFP) – “It’s unbelievable, unreal,” says an England fan at Boxpark Wembley in London after the team’s victory over Norway, securing their place in the World Cup semi-finals. Norway took an early lead in the first half, but two goals in extra time by star midfielder Jude Bellingham saw England win 2-1. “We are through to the semi-finals because of that man Jude Bellingham,” says England fan Livz Ledge.

Bayeux Tapestry arrives in London after epic journey from France

Dover (United Kingdom) (AFP) – The medieval Bayeux Tapestry arrives in London after a hugely complicated journey to leave France for the first time in more than 900 years for an exhibition in the British capital. “It’s been very special to have witnessed the arrival of the Bayeux Tapestry, and especially for it to be back on these shores for the first time in probably a thousand years,” says Nicholas Cullinan, the director of the British Museum.

‘Dads do hair’ workshops take over Munich

Munich (Germany) (AFP) – In a bustling bar in Munich, fathers gather for an evening of beer, scrunchies and combs as they attend the third “Dads Do Hair” workshop organised by hairdresser Anita Erdmann, who was inspired by a similar event in London. Her 90-minute sessions are fully booked every time, with countless dads eager to do more to help out at home and bond with their daughters. “One dad wrote to me that he bought a tool box and filled it with hair accessories,” says the hairdresser on the success of her workshops.

Kremlin rejects US claim that Ukrainian strikes will help end war

Moscow (AFP) – Russia rejects a U.S. statement that Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy sites could help bring an end to the more than four-year war between Moscow and Kyiv. “We see certain misconceptions within the White House administration — that by escalating military pressure, it can help move to a peace settlement. That is a mistaken view,” says Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

The Afghan women farmers keeping their village alive

Ishtiwī (Afghanistan) (AFP) – In a remote province of northeastern Afghanistan, women farmers are playing a vital role in their community’s survival. Almost a third of the Afghan population needs emergency food aid, according to the UN, so the women’s harvest helps support food security in their home village. The Afghan women are generally allowed to farm despite being banned by the Taliban government from most employment.

Residents and volunteers clean up following floods in China’s Guangxi province

Liulan (China) (AFP) – Residents and volunteers shovel water and clear debris from flooded houses in China’s Guangxi province following massive rains that caused a nearby reservoir to burst its banks. In the southern region, six people died, and at least 130,000 people were evacuated to safety after torrential rain and severe flooding from Typhoon Maysak, according to officials.

Iwik (Mauritania) (AFP) – Where the arid Sahara meets the Atlantic Ocean, the Imraguen, a desert fishing people, have for centuries developed fishing practices in harmony with nature, a way of life now threatened by climate change, overfishing and the difficulty of passing it onto the next generation. “The Imraguen life we once knew no longer exists,” says Mariam Bilal, a fish processor. “Even if it still exists, what remains is something basic, because they have nothing. There’s no fish.”
