Gaza City (Palestinian Territories) (AFP) – Young Gazan contortionists train with the dream of taking part in international competitions, such as a yoga competition in India in November they have been invited to. Israel’s blockade of the Palestinian enclave means however that it’s unlikely they’ll be able to leave the territory to compete.

Pooch scoop: Japan rescuers save drowning dog from river

Chita (Japan) (AFP) – Japan coast guard officers rescue a drowning dog in a river near the central city of Nagoya. They rushed to the site on a boat after receiving an emergency call from the dog’s owner and safely rescued the Sheltie from the cold water.

North Koreans don hazmat suits for anniversary parade

Pyongyang (AFP) – North Korea puts health personnel in orange hazmat suits on show at a parade in Pyongyang, rather than the more usual tanks and ballistic missiles. The country holds parades regularly to show off its military might, but this pageant featured tractor-towed artillery and fire engines rolling through the streets in front of leader Kim Jong Un.

Major earthquake shakes Mexico, leaving at least one dead

Acapulco (Mexico) (AFP) – A huge earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale struck Mexico near the Pacific resort city of Acapulco, leaving at least one person dead and shaking buildings in the capital several hundred kilometers away.

Criminalizing abortion unconstitutional, rules Mexico’s Supreme Court

Mexico City (AFP) – Mexico’s Supreme Court has voted unanimously to declare the criminalization of abortion unconstitutional. Up to now, abortion has been legal in Mexico City and three other states in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, while elsewhere, the procedure was only permitted in cases of rape.

Russian Arctic polar bear spotted in Essen Bay

Prince George Land (Russia) (AFP) – A polar bear wanders along Essen Bay on Prince George Land in the Russian Arctic as a changing climate endangers the survival of the species. The bears’ hunting ground is shrinking due to melting ice amid rising global temperatures, polar bears are being pushed further in search of food making sightings more frequent.

Khan Yunis (Palestinian Territories) (AFP) – Explosions flare in the distance as Israeli airstrikes hit Hamas targets in Khan Yunis in the sourthern Gaza Strip, after incendiary balloons launched from the strip started fires in southern Israel.

Street art takes centre stage at Berlin Mural Fest

Berlin (AFP) – Giant artworks adorn buildings in the German capital once again as the Berlin Mural Fest resumes after its 2020 edition was cancelled due to Covid-19. The festival has been controversial in the Berlin art scene because it is supported by the large property group Deutsche Wohnen, which plays a leading role in the German market, but in Berlin, where its housing stock is concentrated, Deutsche Wohnen suffers from an unsavoury image as a speculator that fuels rising prices.
