Police guard Bogota clinic where Colombian presidential contender is hospitalized

Bogotá (AFP) – Police officers guard the entrance to the Fundacion Santa Fe clinic, in Bogota, where Colombian presidential candidate Miguel Uribe is hospitalized after being shot. Thirty-nine-year-old Senator Miguel Uribe has successfully undergone initial surgery, according to authorities. He was speaking to supporters in the capital when a gunman shot him twice in the head and once in the knee before being detained. A security guard managed to detain the suspected attacker, a minor who is believed to be 15 years old. Uribe was airlifted to hospital in “critical condition” and underwent a “neurosurgical” and “peripheral vascular procedure,” the Santa Fe Clinic in Bogota confirmed. IMAGES

In Tunisia’s arid south, camel milk offers hope of economic gain

El Hamma (Tunisia) (AFP) – Deep in Tunisia’s desert south, camels stride toward humming milking machines. Their milk is at the heart of a women-led project promising an economic lifeline for disadvantaged communities. Spearheading this effort is 32-year-old Latifa Frifita, who launched Tunisia’s first, and so far only, camel milk pasteurisation unit two years ago in Medenine. Containing up to five times more iron than cow’s milk, camel milk is non-alergenic and some studies have suggested that it has immune-boosting and anti-inflammatory properties.

110 stuffed lizards to be used for medical treatment seized in Peru

Arequipa (Peru) (AFP) – Peruvian authorities seized 110 stuffed lizards that were to be used illegally for traditional medicine treatments in southern Peru, the National Forestry and Wildlife Service (Serfor) says. The lizards were preserved in glass jars with alcohol and were being sold illegally as alternative treatments to herbal remedies.

Thousands gather in Nice for a drone show ahead of the UN Ocean Conference, where more than two thousand drones light up the sky with marine creatures. France will host world leaders this week to confront what the UN calls a “global emergency”. There is pressure on the conference starting Monday to show countries can unite and deliver more than just talk for the world’s ailing and neglected seas.
