London (AFP) – A rare oil painting of Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi, believed to have been damaged by a Hindu nationalist activist, is to be auctioned in July. Gandhi, one of the most influential figures in India’s history who led a non-violent movement against British rule and inspired similar resistance campaigns across the world, is the subject of tens of thousands of artworks, books and films. But a 1931 painting by British-American artist Clare Leighton is believed to be the only oil portrait he sat for, according to the painter’s family who have had the painting since it was created.

Brasilia (AFP) – Bolsonaro’s former right-hand man, Mauro Cid, leaves the Federal Police headquarters in Brasilia, where he was questioned by police. Brazilian police arrested a former minister of Jair Bolsonaro suspected of obstructing the trial against the former president over an alleged 2022 coup attempt, according to a source involved in the investigation. Gilson Machado, former Minister of Tourism, gave a statement to the police over an alleged failed attempt to help Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid — Bolsonaro’s former right-hand man — flee the country. Guayaquil (Ecuador) (AFP) – A military helicopter in Ecuador drops hundreds of fake bills over the violence-stricken city of Guayaquil, each bearing a government phone number aimed at encouraging citizens to report criminals. The fake bills resemble $100 notes and feature red lettering with the messages: “Rewards for information” and “Call 131 toll-free.”

Ahmedabad (AFP) – The only passenger to have survived the Air India plane crash says he can’t believe he’s still alive. Speaking from a hospital bed in Ahemdabad, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British citizen, tells national broadcaster DD News how the plane’s door broke and there was enough space for him to get out. Ramesh, who was reportedly seated in seat 11A, is the only one of 242 people aboard the London-bound flight to have survived, with at least 24 others killed on the ground.
