Greenland’s Inuits rediscover their national pride

Nuuk (AFP) – Greenland’s former colonial power Denmark previously pursued assimilation policies that included forced sterilisations and de facto bans on the Inuit language and traditional tattoos. As Greenland gradually regained autonomy in the second half of the 20th century, its population, still almost 90 percent Inuit today, began to rediscover long-stifled traditions — which US President Donald Trump’s expansionist ambitions have only spurred on further.

Syria security forces disperse rival protests in Damascus

Damaskus (AFP) – Syrian security forces fire into the air to disperse rival protests after pro-government demonstrators clash with a gathering mourning dead civilians, following the reported mass killings of Alawites. Deadly violence in Syria’s Alawite heartland in the country’s north-west has seen hundreds killed in targeted attacks against the religious minority or in clashes between security forces and armed groups loyal to ousted President Bashar al-Assad. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitor, said security forces and allied groups had killed 830 Alawite civilians over the past four days.

German conservatives and centre-left agree in principle to form govt

Berlin (AFP) – The German conservatives of Friedrich Merz and the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) reveal that they have reached an in-principle agreement to form a government that plans to invest heavily in reviving and rearming Europe’s largest economy. Merz, who won Germany’s February 23 election, says alongside Lars Klingbeil of the SPD that they have successfully finished exploratory talks and will now move towards formal talks to build a coalition government.

Anti-junta women soldiers in Myanmar share stories from the battlefield

Moe Bye (AFP) – Amid Myanmar’s ongoing civil war, two women fighters from anti-junta armed resistance group the Urban Revolutionary Front (URF), based in Kayah state, share their personal journeys of resistance since the 2021 coup. Sagawah Aung used to work in the media industry and planned to pursue a master’s degree, but after witnessing women being killed during the anti-junta protests, she decided to join the force. Monica, a student, is also determined to fight — one of very few women soldiers on the frontline.

Destruction after strike in eastern Ukraine kills at least 11

Dobropillia (AFP) – Scenes of destruction after overnight Russian strikes kill at least 11 people in Dobropillia in eastern Ukraine, according to the country’s emergency service. The assault comes days ahead of talks in Saudi Arabia between US and Ukrainian negotiators aimed at a truce.
