Netanyahu says ‘no more excuses’ for UN after Gaza aid routes opened

Negev (AFP) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tells the United Nations to stop blaming his government for the humanitarian situation in Gaza after the military opened up “secure routes” for aid. “There are secure routes. There have always been, but today it’s official,” says the Israeli leader during a visit to an air base. The Israeli decision came as international pressure mounted on Netanyahu’s government to head off the risk of mass starvation in the Palestinian territory.

Thousands march in Tel Aviv to demand Gaza ceasefire and hostage deal

Tel Aviv (AFP) – Thousands of Israelis march towards the US embassy in Tel Aviv to demand a ceasefire deal in Gaza that would secure the safe return of all hostages still held in the Palestinian territory, devastated by over 21 months of war. “I’m demonstrating against our government, against the war, to stop the war,” says a demonstrator. Israel declared a “tactical pause” in fighting in parts of Gaza on Sunday, saying it would allow the UN and aid agencies to open secure land routes to tackle a deepening hunger crisis.

Thailand calls for ‘sincere intent’ from Cambodia to de-escalate fighting

Bangkok (AFP) – Thai foreign affairs spokesperson Maratee Nalita Andamo says Bangkok is waiting for “sincere intent” from the Cambodian side to end the hostilities and says it’s “ready” to engage in a ceasefire dialogue. The Southeast Asian neighbours have been locked in their bloodiest conflict in years over their disputed border, with at least 34 people confirmed killed and more than 200,000 displaced.

Nairobi (AFP) – Kenyans wearing cowboy hats and boots line dance at a country music festival in the capital Nairobi. Several local musicians, including popular artist Elvis Otieno, better known as Sir Elvis, took part in the event. “In this world full of confusion, full of drama, country music is the only thing that makes sense to me and it has made me find peace,” says a festival-goer.

Turnberry (AFP) – US President Donald Trump plays a game of golf at his Turnberry resort on the first full day of his visit to Scotland, as protesters take to the streets across the country. His presence has turned the picturesque and normally quiet area of southwest Scotland into a virtual fortress, with roads closed and police checkpoints in place.
