Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, a 1,703-metre (5,587-foot) twin-peaked volcano on the tourist island of Flores, has erupted more than a dozen times this week, killing nine people after its initial burst on Monday.

Baku (AFP) – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez warns about the consequences of climate change, saying it “kills people” at COP29 in Baku, recalling to those in attendance the recent floods in Spain that have killed more than 220 people.

Moskau (AFP) – A Moscow court sentenced a paediatrician to five-and-a-half years in prison for criticising the Ukraine campaign during a private appointment, after she was denounced by the ex-wife of a soldier killed in combat. Nadezhda Buyanova, 68, was found guilty of spreading “fake” information on the Russian army, under legislation used to silence dissent. She protested her innocence throughout the trial.

Voi (AFP) – Kenya’s growing elephant population and increasing human encroachment on their habitat is making a peaceful coexistence difficult. Now farmers in Taita-Taveta county, near Tsavo National Park, are protecting their crops with an innovative program by Save the Elephants charity – using African honeybees to deter the giant mammals who fear the tiny insect. “I think people are surprised how well they work, and it’s a nice nature-based solution as well,” says the project’s lead, Ewan Brenan.
