Brazil’s Bolsonaro leaves hospital after medical treatments

Brasilia (AFP) – Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, sentenced to 27 years in prison for coup plotting, leaves the DF Star hospital where he went to undergo medical treatments for skin lesions. Bolsonaro’s defense team called the sentence “incredibly excessive” and announced he would appeal, “including at the international level.” Bolsonaro did not attend the verdict hearings in the capital Brasilia, instead following the proceedings from his residence, where he is under house arrest. Nepalis share views on country’s interim leader

Pharping (AFP) – Nepalis in Pharping, south of the capital Kathmandu, share their views on the country’s new interim prime minister Sushila Karki, as the former chief justice chairs her first meeting with government officials, following days of deadly protests that drove her predecessor out of office. Driver Rudra Gautam says the focus should now be on “rebuilding damaged buildings”, while shopkeeper Satya Narayan says lawmakers should also “address the demands of Gen Z.”

Smoke, destruction after Israeli strike on high-rise in Gaza City

Gaza (AFP) – Smoke billows after an Israeli airstrike levelled the Al-Kawthar Tower in western Gaza City, as Israeli forces press on with their assault on the territory’s main urban centre. Israel has said it intends to capture the city, which it describes as one of the last strongholds of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, whose October 2023 attack sparked the Gaza war. As of late August, the UN estimated that around one million people were living in the city and its surrounding areas, where it has declared a famine it blamed on Israeli aid restrictions. Gaza’s civil defence agency says at least 38 people have been killed since dawn on 14 September in Israeli strikes around the territory.

Venezuelans receive shooting training amid ‘threat’ from the US

Valencia (AFP) – Venezuelan civilians learn how to shoot at a military barracks, as President Nicolas Maduro urges Venezuelans to join the civilian militia, which is linked to the armed forces, to help defend the country against what he considers a threat from the United States. Tensions between the two countries have soared in recent weeks after Washington ordered the biggest naval buildup in the Caribbean in years to target drug cartels. Venezuela has since hit out at the US for allegedly seizing a fishing boat for eight hours in its exclusive economic zone.

Bikers ride down highway in memory of Charlie Kirk, mourners hold candlelit vigil

Surprise (AFP) – Bikers ride down a highway in Surprise, Arizona, in memory of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk who was shot while addressing a large crowd at Utah Valley University. His supporters also hold a candlelit vigil in Morristown, Arizona. Kirk, who rallied his millions of followers to help President Donald Trump win a second White House term, was both revered and reviled for his pro-gun, anti-abortion and anti-immigrant rhetoric. Kirk’s murder has been condemned by both sides of the political aisle.

Nepal’s new PM arrives to chair first meeting with government officials

Kathmandu (AFP) – Nepal’s new leader, Sushila Karki, arrives at the prime minister’s office to chair her first meeting with government officials since becoming interim leader. The former chief justice was appointed on Friday following deadly anti-corruption protests that toppled her predecessor. 110,000 turn out for far-right rally in London

London (AFP) – More than 100,000 people mass in central London for a march and rally organised by far-right activist Tommy Robinson, as anti-racism campaigners hold a smaller counter-protest. Huge crowds, many draped in English and British flags, gathered through the morning just south of Westminster for what Robinson, a veteran of UK far-right organising, has branded the country’s “biggest free speech festival”.

Palestinians head southwards amid Israeli strikes on Gaza City

Nuseirat (AFP) – Palestinians on trucks and donkey-pulled carts are seen on the Al-Rasheed coastal road in the central Gaza Strip as they head southwards after leaving Gaza City and the northern areas of the Strip to flee Israeli army strikes. Israel has said it intends to capture the territory’s largest urban centre, which it describes as one of the last strongholds of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, whose October 2023 attack sparked the Gaza war.
