Blinded in Bangladesh protests, students hope for better future

Dhaka (AFP) – Bangladeshi student Omar Faruq believes the future of his country is bright but all he can see is darkness, after police trying to crush a student-led revolution blinded him with rubber pellets. Faruq is one of dozens being treated at the National Institute of Opthalmology and Hospital. Many of them say their injuries are a small price to pay for the ouster of ex-premier Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India on August 5 ending her 15-year autocratic rule.

Displaced Sudanese build new homes from clay as war rages

Merowe (Sudan) (AFP) – With little hope of the war in Sudan ending soon, displaced people in the north of the country are building houses in a more traditional way, using materials including mud and palm fronds. Tens of thousands of people have been killed since the start of the war between the army and paramilitary forces. More than 10 million have also been displaced.

Body brought ashore in Sicily yacht wreck search operation

Porticello (Italy) (AFP) – Emergency workers bring a body ashore during the search operation for six missing people following the sinking of a superyacht off the Sicilian coast. Two bodies have now been found by the divers, according to a source close to the search, bringing the confirmed death toll to three. The 56-metre British-flagged “Bayesian” was anchored with 10 crew and 12 passengers on board when it was struck by a waterspout, akin to a mini-tornado, before dawn on 19 August.
