The former chief justice was appointed on Friday following deadly anti-corruption protests that toppled her predecessor. 110,000 turn out for far-right rally in London

London (AFP) – More than 100,000 people mass in central London for a march and rally organised by far-right activist Tommy Robinson, as anti-racism campaigners hold a smaller counter-protest. Huge crowds, many draped in English and British flags, gathered through the morning just south of Westminster for what Robinson, a veteran of UK far-right organising, has branded the country’s “biggest free speech festival”.

Palestinians head southwards amid Israeli strikes on Gaza City

Nuseirat (AFP) – Palestinians on trucks and donkey-pulled carts are seen on the Al-Rasheed coastal road in the central Gaza Strip as they head southwards after leaving Gaza City and the northern areas of the Strip to flee Israeli army strikes. Israel has said it intends to capture the territory’s largest urban centre, which it describes as one of the last strongholds of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, whose October 2023 attack sparked the Gaza war.

Finnish phone ban brings a new normal

Sipoo (AFP) – In this Finnish school, mobile phones are now banned. At Kungsvagens Skola, northeast of Helsinki, teachers collect students’ phones in the morning and lock them in a storage room until the end of the school day. “The biggest change is that they talk to each other more. You can see that they have become more sociable,” says headteacher Maria Tallberg.

Charlie Kirk’s widow thanks Trump, Vance for support after suspect’s arrest

Phoenix (AFP) – Charlie Kirk’s widow makes her first public statement following the arrest of the suspected gunman in her husband’s killing. Speaking through tears, Erika Kirk thanks US President Donald Trump and his family for their support, saying her husband “loved” Trump. She also praises Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha, for “honoring” Kirk and helping to “bring him home.”

Morning prayers in Kathmandu as Nepal wakes up to new PM

Kathmandu (AFP) – Worshippers leave offerings and pray at the Boudhanath Stupa in Kathmandu as Nepal adjusts to the appointment of a new prime minister, just days after anti-corruption protests left at least 51 people dead. Former chief justice Sushila Karki has been sworn in the previous day to oversee a six-month transition to elections.

Filipinos grapple with life on sinking island

Bulacan (AFP) – On the Philippine island of Pugad, street food vendor Maria Tamayo uses a plastic dustpan to bail seawater out the door only to find the floor swamped again the next day. The routine has been the same ever since the rising tides of Manila Bay began swallowing the island, which is in danger of sinking completely underwater. With high tides flooding the streets at least three times a week, the sea already dictates the rhythm of daily life on Pugad.

Prince Harry makes surprise visit to Ukraine

Kiew (AFP) – Prince Harry makes a surprise visit to Ukraine to support Ukrainian soldiers wounded in the war with Russia. Harry arrived in Kyiv via an overnight train early on September 12, according to Ukrainian Railways, which posted a video of him being greeted on the platform in the capital. It also reported Harry was due to meet Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko and around 200 Ukrainian veterans.
