Prince Harry makes surprise visit to Ukraine

Kiew (AFP) – Prince Harry makes a surprise visit to Ukraine to support Ukrainian soldiers wounded in the war with Russia. Harry arrived in Kyiv via an overnight train early on September 12, according to Ukrainian Railways, which posted a video of him being greeted on the platform in the capital. It also reported Harry was due to meet Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko and around 200 Ukrainian veterans.

North Korea human rights situation ‘degraded’ in last decade, finds UN report

Genf (AFP) – The human rights situation in North Korea has “degraded” over the last decade, according to a UN report that lays out “the suffering, brutal repression and fear” experienced by the country’s population. The UN first published a report on North Korea in 2014, with fresh information showing that the wide array of crimes against humanity continues in many instances.

Brazil divided as Bolsonaro sentenced to 27 years for coup plotting

Brasília (AFP) – Brazil’s Supreme Court has sentenced firebrand ex-president Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years in prison for coup plotting. Judges voted 4-1 to convict Bolsonaro of plotting to overthrow Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva following his October 2022 election defeat by the left-winger. The case drove a deep wedge through Brazilian society, between those primarily on the left who saw it as a vital test of the country’s democracy, and those mainly on the right who viewed it as a political show trial.

South Korean workers arrive home after US detention

Incheon (AFP) – A specially chartered flight carrying hundreds of South Korean workers detained in a US immigration raid lands at Incheon International Airport. South Koreans made up the majority of the 475 people arrested at a Hyundai-LG battery factory site in the state of Georgia, triggering a delicate effort to resolve the thorny situation between close allies.

Paris (AFP) – A day after demonstrators rallied across France in a show of grassroots opposition to President Emmanuel Macron, cleaning crews are removing graffiti from the base of a statue in Paris. France’s new Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu’s first day on the job coincided with nationwide street protests, which resulted in clashes with police, with one protester hospitalised after being tear-gassed.

Europe hyperloop test hits new speed record in Dutch trial

Veendam (AFP) – Dutch tech startup Hardt Hyperloop tests its futuristic hyperloop transport system. The company says it has set a European speed record for the system and could reach 700 kilometres (435 miles) per hour once longer tracks are built. The development comes as China pushes ahead with its own high-speed projects, with state media reporting tests above 600 kph and a goal of linking Shanghai and Guangzhou by 2035.

Russian drones in Polish airspace ‘provocation’ to test response, says president

Posen (AFP) – Polish President Karol Nawrocki says violations of Polish airspace by Russian drones are “a provocation” designed to test the response capabilities of Poland and NATO. “We have passed all these tests,” he adds during a visit to a military base in Poznan, a day after Warsaw accused Moscow of carrying out a drone raid on its territory.
