Thousands gather at Stonehenge to celebrate summer solstice

Stonehenge (United Kingdom) (AFP) – Tens of thousands of people gather at Stonehenge, the renowned prehistoric UNESCO world heritage site in southwest England, to celebrate the northern hemisphere’s summer solstice at dawn on 21 June 2024. The Neolithic monument, which is thought to have been erected around 2,500 BC, aligns with the rising sun on the morning of the summer solstice, which has drawn revellers to celebrate since prehistoric times.

‘Suffocating heat’: Body of US-bound migrant recovered at Mexico border

Ciudad Juárez (Mexico) (AFP) – In the desert of the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua, near the US border, migrants are risking their lives attempting the desert crossing to the United States in extreme temperatures. After the body of a migrant was recovered by Mexican civil protection officials, authorities are cautioning migrants to avoid the perilous journey. At a Catholic church community kitchen for US-bound migrants Venezuelan Bilmari Karin recounts her journey: “It’s a lot. A lot of suffocating heat, there’s the sand, you go through a lot of things in the desert.”

Karbala (Iraq) (AFP) – Fishermen in central Iraq have seen the quantity and variety of fish in Karbala’s Razzaza Lake dwindle in recent years. Since Saddam Hussein’s embankment system draining southern marshes, severe droughts and shortages of water have hit the once plentiful lake.
