Germans enjoy ‘great start’ to Euro 2024 while Scots remain hopeful

Munich (Germany) (AFP) – Germany thrashed 10-man Scotland 5-1 as the Euro 2024 hosts kicked off the tournament in style in Munich. Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann said he would not be a “killjoy” after the host nation’s blistering start to Euro 2024 — a 5-1 thumping of Scotland in Munich. With five different players scoring goals, Germany delivered their best showing so far under Nagelsmann — and one of their most convincing team performances in some time. The group A teams will also be facing Switzerland and Hungary.

Ancient Greek sanctuary slowly sinks as Mediterranean sea level rises

Insel Delos (AFP) – Just a short boat ride from the pounding nightclubs of Greece’s Mykonos island, a silent battle is raging. Delos, one of the most important sites of the ancient world, is slowly disappearing under the rising Mediterranean, with experts saying it could vanish “in fifty years or so”. Rising sea levels have already submerged monuments and caused the shoreline to retreat up to 20 metres on some parts of the island.

Tending the bees behind her house near Tetovo, western North Macedonia, Miloseska has seen first-hand the harmful effects of climate change on her honey harvests, with warm winters and sudden changes in temperature creating conditions favourable to parasites and the development of disease.

Flooding after downpours hit Chile

Arauco (AFP) – Severe flooding has hit parts of Chile after heavy rains battered the centre and south of the country, killing one person and causing damage to hundreds of homes. Chile’s weather service issued the highest level of alarm, covering some 14 million of the 20 million people, but this was later lifted as authorities said 80 percent of the storm had passed and was headed for neighboring Argentina.

BTS ARMY turns out in force after band member finishes army service

Seoul (AFP) – The BTS ARMY gathers in Seoul for the K-pop phenomenon’s annual FESTA, which this year has coincided with Jin – the band’s oldest member – finishing his compulsory military service. The group has been on a self-desribed ‘hiatus’ since 2022, when all seven band members were conscripted, a requirement for all men under 30 in South Korea. Just days after being released from service, Jin is set to host a ‘huggathon’, during which he will hug 1,000 lucky fans.

Chile braces for worst wind and rain in forty years

Viña del Mar (Chile) (AFP) – The coastal city of Vina del Mar, a popular tourist destination in Chile’s Valparaiso region, prepares for high winds and heavy rain after the country’s meteorological agency issued the highest level of weather warning for six regions. The weather front is expected to be Chile’s worst since 1982, when rains killed 15 people in the capital, Santiago, according to official records.
