ICC prosecutor seeks Gaza ‘war crimes’ arrest warrant for Netanyahu and Hamas leaders

The Hague (AFP) – The ICC prosecutor Karim Khan says he is seeking warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant and senior Hamas leaders on suspicion of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Among the charges laid against the Israeli leadership are the “starvation of civilians as a method of warfare” and “wilful killing”. Khan accuses Hamas of “extermination” and “sexual violence during captivity” among a host of other charges.

Iranians ‘saddened’ by the death of President Raisi

Tehran (AFP) – Residents of Tehran, the Iranian capital, express their sadness at the death of President Ebrahim Raisi, who was one of nine people killed in a helicopter crash. The ultraconservative leader’s death was confirmed on Monday 20 May after rescue crews located the wreckage of his aircraft in a foggy mountainous region. Five days of mourning have been declared in Iran, with condolences flooding in from Palestinian militant group Hamas, Lebanon’s Hezbollah and from Syria.

Swathes of agricultural land underwater as flooding hits northern Colombia

San Jacinto del Cauca (Colombia) (AFP) – Water covers thousands of hectares of agricultural land in Colombia’s northern Sucre department following the collapse of an artificial dike. According to the government’s National Disaster Risk Management Unit, 7,928 hectares of rice, corn, yucca and plantain crops have been affected, with 7,806 people forced to evacuate.

President Raisi’s death ‘a great loss to the Iranian people’ says China

Beijing (AFP) – The death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi is “a great loss” says Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin. Raisi was declared dead on Monday after rescue teams found his crashed helicopter in a mountainous western region, trigerring condolences from Iran’s allies at a time of heightened tensions in the Middle East.

LGBTIQ+ activists march against decree describing transsexuality as ‘mental disorder’

Lima (AFP) – LGBTQ+ groups call a protest outside Peru’s Ministry of Health, in the capital Lima, against a new government decree listing transsexualism as a “mental disorder.” The government on May 10 updated its list of insurable health conditions — which since 2021 has offered benefits for mental health treatment — to include services for transgender people. Rafah is a Hamas ‘stronghold’, Israel tells the UN’s top court

The Hague (AFP) – Israel lashes out at South Africa’s case before the UN’s top court, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) describing it as “distorted” and saying Rafah is a “stronghold” for Hamas. The comments by Israel’s representatives at the ICJ come as Pretoria urges the court to order a halt to Israel’s ground offensive in Rafah. The Hamas attack on October 7 resulted in the death of more than 1,170 people in Israel, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures. Out of 252 people taken hostage that day, 128 are still being held inside the Gaza Strip, including 38 who the army says are dead. At least 35,303 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the war broke out, according to data provided by the health ministry of Hamas-run Gaza. Israeli military says 279 soldiers have been killed in the Gaza military campaign since the start of the ground offensive on October 27

Indonesia’s Mount Ibu erupts again, forcing hundreds to evacuate

West Halmahera (Indonesia) (AFP) – Mount Ibu on Indonesia’s remote Halmahera island erupts again — the second massive eruption in two days — spewing ash and smoke 5,000 metres (16,400 feet) into the sky. Hundreds of people living near the erupting volcano have been evacuated after authorities raised its alert status to the highest level.
