Yemen’s Huthis say fired missiles at US warship

Sanaa (AFP) – Yemen’s Huthi rebels say they fired “several” missiles at a US warship in the Red Sea, adding that they consider all American and British ships “legitimate targets” so long as US-UK strikes on the Iran-backed group continues. The Huthis began targeting Red Sea shipping in November, saying they were hitting Israeli-linked vessels in support of Palestinians in Gaza, which has been ravaged by the Israel-Hamas war. The Red Sea is a key shipping transit route which carries up to 12 percent of global trade.

Myanmar anti-junta protesters rally in Bangkok

Bangkok (AFP) – Outside of the United Nations office in Bangkok, hundreds protest against Myanmar’s junta to mark the third anniversary of an army coup that ended the country’s fledgling democracy, repeatedly raising the three-fingered salute that has become a symbol of anti-coup demonstrations. The Southeast Asian country’s military is facing its toughest challenge since seizing power in 2021, with a coalition of armed ethnic minority groups making gains in the north.

Quebec City (AFP) – Gerald Cyprien Lacroix, Canadian cardinal and close advisor to Pope Francis denies accusations he sexually assaulted a teenage girl in the 1980s. “I have decided to temporarily withdraw from the activities of my Diocese,” he adds.

Road accident in Mexico leaves at least 19 dead and 22 injured

Elota (Mexico) (AFP) – A collision between a double-decker bus and a truck has killed at least 19 people and left 22 injured in the Mexican state of Sinaloa, according to authorities. The accident occurred in the vicinity of the municipality of Elota, a tourist destination for mainly US and Canadian citizens who fish in the El Salto dam.
