Car drifting steers Iraq’s youth away from drugs and alcohol

Baghdad (AFP) – Tyres screech and crowd cheers as young Iraqi drift racers put on a show at the Mesopotamia Engines Sport Club in Baghdad. The activity serves as a vital outlet for young people to blow off steam in a healthy and productive manner. “I love this sport,” says Hassouni Al-Malik who, at just 21 years old, is Iraq’s youngest drift racer. “We do this for our fans and to create a new generation of racers that will take it up after us.”

Three months after deadly quake, solidarity is key in a Moroccan camp

Imzilne (Morocco) (AFP) – Nearly three months after a deadly earthquake hit mountainous southern Morocco and with temperatures dipping as winter approaches, the residents of a tent village close to Marrakesh are making the most of the situation, turning makeshift shelters into communal living spaces. “Our camp is a model here in the region because we have a collective oven,” says Taoufiq Jaidi, Imzilne’s camp coordinator.

Peruvian former president Fujimori likely to be released tomorrow: daughter

Lima (AFP) – “We hope that in the next few hours, early tomorrow morning, they can correct this error and finally release him,” says Keiko Fujimori, daughter of former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori, who was expected to be released today following a ruling by the Constitutional Court. Fujimori has been jailed since 2009 over massacres committed by army death squads in 1991 and 1992 in which 25 people, including a child, were killed in supposed anti-terrorist operations.

‘Daddy cool’ Swedish dad boyband goes viral

Norrköping (Sweden) (AFP) – Five Swedish fathers singing a capella pop songs while taking care of their young children have taken social media by storm, with their videos garnering tens of millions of views. The five men, all in their 30s, film their “Dad Harmony” sessions while hanging out with their kids at home in Sweden. The group is currently on tour in the Scandinavian country for the first time, with fans praising them for their “natural” and down-to-earth style.

China says EU’s export policies don’t ‘make sense’

Beijing (AFP) – China says European Union export policies towards Beijing do not “make sense”, on the eve of a high-level summit in the Chinese capital. It also says that China supports close ally Venezuela and Guyana in solving border issues with “friendly consultation”, as Caracas proposed a bill to create a Venezuelan province in a disputed oil-rich region.

UN says ‘not possible’ to create safe zones in Gaza

6Geneva (Switzerland) (AFP) – The United Nations warns that it is impossible to create so-called safe zones for civilians to flee to inside the Gaza Strip amid Israel’s bombing campaign. Israel declared war on Hamas after the militant group’s October 7 attacks that killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, according to Israeli authorities. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says the war has killed nearly 15,900 people in the territory.

Dozens killed after Nigerian army drone strike hits villagers

Igabi (Nigeria) (AFP) – A drone strike killed at least 85 civilians and injured dozens others in northwest Nigeria by accident after the army mistook them for armed militants in the area. Many of the victims were women, children and elderly who had been celebrating the Muslim festival of Maulud.
