Belgium PM vows ‘terrorism will never defeat us’ after deadly attack

Brussels (AFP) – Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo vows “terrorism will never defeat us”, offering condolences to the friends and families of two Swedish victims killed in an attack in Brussels on October 16. The suspect was shot and fatally wounded by police during his arrest, according to officials.

Jordanian King Abdullah II: Middle East ‘on the brink of abyss’

Berlin (AFP) – Jordanian King Abdullah II warns of a dire situation in the Middle East if the conflict between Israel and Hamas is allowed to spread to other countries, and says the escalating refugee crisis “has to be dealt with inside Gaza and the West Bank”. “The whole region is on the brink of falling into the abyss,” Abdullah says during a press conference after meeting German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin.

Indonesian dancers keep the beat for ancient drag tradition

Jakarta (AFP) – The Lengger Lanang dance is performed by men dressed as Javanese princesses, wearing tight, colourful batik dresses and ornaments woven into their fake hair bun updos. But the tradition is close to disappearing in the Muslim-majority country of Indonesia, with fewer than 100 performers courageous enough to take part in shows.

Two Swedes killed in Brussels shooting

Brussels (AFP) – Two Swedish nationals were shot dead in Brussels in an attack the Belgian prime minister described as “terrorism”. In a video posted on social media, a man identifying himself as the attacker said “he was inspired by the Islamic State” (IS) extremist group, the spokesman for the federal prosecutor’s office, Eric Van Duyse, said on the LN24 news channel. The suspect remains at large.

France holds candlelight vigil to honour teacher killed in attack

Arras (France) (AFP) – A candlelight vigil is held for a teacher stabbed to death last week in what the government called an Islamist terror attack, with the president urging a “ruthless” response to extremists. The national anti-terrorist prosecutor announced that it has opened an investigation.

24 hours left for aid to enter Gaza before ‘catastrophe’ warns WHO

Cairo (AFP) – “As far as water, electricity and fuel are concerned, after 24 hours it will be a real catastrophe” in the Gaza Strip, warns the regional head of the United Nations’ World Health Organisation Ahmed al-Mandhari. The convoys of aid heading towards the war-torn Palestinian territory are currently stuck across the Rafah border crossing with Egypt.
