Pope Francis prays for Libya and Morocco after deadly natural disasters

Vatican City (AFP) – Pope Francis uses his weekly audience to pray for the victims of the flooding in Libya and for the people of Morocco hit by a deadly earthquake. “My thoughts are with the people of Libya” says the 86-year-old pontiff, “let us pray for Morocco… after this terrible ‘ambush’ they have been through.”

Thousands feared dead or missing in aftermath of devastating Libya floods

Sūsah (Libya) (AFP) – Huge flash floods devastated eastern regions of Libya on the evening of September 10, with a surge of muddy river water ripping away entire neighbourhoods in one coastal city. In the eastern town of Derna, heavy rains caused raging torrents in a river. The death toll from the floods stands at 2,300 people and 10,000 people are believed to be missing. Kim Jong Un says deepening ties with Russia is ‘number one priority’

North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un tells Russian President Vladimir Putin that Pyongyang will make bilateral ties with Moscow its “number one priority” and that it supports Russia in its struggle against “hegemonist forces” seeking to undermine its security. Speaking at a meeting with Putin in Russia’s Far East, Kim added “we have always expressed full and unconditional support for all the measures taken by the Russian government, and I take this opportunity again to affirm that we will always be with Russia”.

Russian minister greets North Korean leader Kim Jong Un

Khasan (Russia) (AFP) – North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is welcomed by Russia’s Minister for Natural Resources and Ecology, Alexander Kozlov, as he arrives in eastern Russia ahead of a meeting with president Vladimir Putin. The United States has warned that the visit, a rare foreign trip for Kim, could signal the making of an arms deal to support Moscow’s assault on Ukraine. According to a Kremlin spokesperson, Putin and Kim will meet at an unspecified location in Russia’s Far East later this week.

Tehran (AFP) – One year since nationwide protests erupted across Iran in reaction to the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, the issue of the hijab remains a sore spot. But an unrelenting economic crisis has left most Iranians too preoccupied with making ends meet. “They need first to address the economic problem, then they can gradually work on social problems,” says Raha, a 34-year-old accountant. Iran’s economy has been reeling from US sanctions since 2018, when Washington unilaterally withdrew from a landmark nuclear deal.

Russian President Vladimir Putin says current US authorities have created “an anti-Russian spirit and mindset” in American society. Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum in the Russian port city of Vladivostok, Putin adds: “I don’t think there will be any changes to American foreign policy regarding Russia, no matter who is chosen as president.”
