‘Not afraid of the virus’: Wuhan turns page on Covid, three years on

Wuhan (China) (AFP) – Residents of China’s Wuhan say they are hopeful for the future and no longer afraid of Covid-19, three years after the city was locked down over what was then a mysterious virus. Since Beijing ordered the city to be sealed off in a bid to suffocate the outbreak in January 2020, Covid has spread across the planet, killing millions and plunging the global economy into turmoil.

Police on the scene of mass shooting in California

Monterey Park (United States) (AFP) – Images show police and other officials, including from the FBI, at the scene of the mass shooting that left 10 people dead and 10 others wounded at a dance club in Monterey Park during Lunar New Year celebrations. Police have been involved in a stand-off with the man they believe was responsible for the killing, according to media reports.

An inflatable ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’ on Paris’ Trocadero esplanade

Paris (AFP) – An inflatable installation on the Trocadero esplanade, in front of the Eiffel Tower, appeared on the sidelines of Paris Fashion Week. The creation is inspired by “Howl’s Moving Castle”, the famous animated film by Japanese producer Hayao Miyazaki, in collaboration with the luxury clothing brand Loewe.

Crowds throw turnips at the ‘Jarramplas’ during ‘brutal but emotional’ traditional Spanish festival

Piornal (Spain) (AFP) – In the town of Piornal in Spain, a centuries-old traditional festival has crowds throw turnips at the “Jarramplas,” a man dressed in multicoloured garb and a pointy wooden headgear. According to tradition, Jarramplas represents a cattle rustler, but he also embodies evil and beating him symbolises the expulsion of everything bad.
