Makeshift clinic provides care in war-torn Sudan

At a clinic within a small school in Omdurman, a northern suburb of Sudan’s capital Khartoum, doctor Mohammed al-Taher and local volunteers tend to the wounded and the sick with a few boxes of medicine and whatever resources they can find. Six weeks of war has taken its toll on Sudan’s already fragile health service – according to the doctors’ union, three quarters of hospitals in combat zones are out of service.

Ahmedabad (India) (AFP) – Tens of thousands of fans return to support their team in the Indian Premier league title clash between the defending champions Gujarat Titans and the Chennai Super Kings after the game was washed out on Sunday. The match takes place in Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, the world’s largest cricket ground, with a capacity of 132,000 fans.

Egypt unveils ancient mummification workshops and tombs

Saqqara (Egypt) (AFP) – Archaeologists in Egypt have unearthed two human and animal embalming workshops as well as two tombs, discovered in the Saqqara necropolis south of Cairo. This is the first discovery of such workshops linked to the temples in the vast burial ground, situated at the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, the area is home to more than a dozen pyramids, animal graves and old Coptic Christian monasteries.

German brewery aims to be ‘most sustainable in the world’ with new powdered beer

Made from just two ingredients: powder and water, the beer-like brew is made to be cheaper and more sustainable than traditional beer. With its golden hue, bittersweet notes and frothy head, this latest brew is so far non-alcoholic and has no bubbles.

Uganda announces anti-gay bill has been signed into law

Kampala (AFP) – Uganda announces that President Yoweri Museveni has signed into law draconian new measures against homosexuality, described as being among the world’s harshest. Speaking at a press conference announcing the law, MP Asuman Basalirwa confirms those found guilty could face life imprisonment or even death. The news has prompted condemnation from human rights and LGBQT groups.
