Nord Stream sabotage ‘not our activity’ says Ukraine defence minister

Stockholm (AFP) – The Ukrainian government was not involved in the sabotage last year of the Nord Stream gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea, the country’s defence minister says. “This is not our activity”, Defence Minister Oleksiy Reznikov tells reporters in Stockholm ahead of a meeting with EU defence ministers, in response to a report in The New York Times that US officials had seen new intelligence indicating a “pro-Ukrainian group” was responsible for the sabotage.

Copenhagen (AFP) – Copenhagen may have woken up to snow, but this unusual late winter event did not stop its inhabitants from taking their bikes to work. In the Nordic city, which prides itself on being the cycling capital of the world, half of all journeys are made by bike.

London wakes up to rare March snow

London (AFP) – London wakes up to a thin dusting of snow, a rare occurence in March, as the UK begins a cold spell forecast to last several days. In Kinbrace, Scotland, temperatures plunged to minus 15.2 Celsius, making the night of 7-8 March the coldest in this month for the UK since 2010.

Bakhmut may fall ‘in coming days’: NATO chief

Stockholm (AFP) – NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg warns that the eastern Ukrainian town of Bakhmut may fall into Russian hands in the coming days following months of intense fighting.”We can not rule out that Bakhmut may eventually fall in the coming days,” Stoltenberg tells reporters in Stockholm on the sidelines of a meeting of EU defence ministers.

Thousands protest outside Athens Academy over train tragedy

Athens (AFP) – Protesters gather outside Athens Academy ahead of a march to Syntagma Square, after a train disaster that killed 57 people and sparked anger across the country. A police spokesperson in Athens said around 23,000 people are on the streets of central Athens, as the dilapidated rail network and technical failures are blamed for the head-on collision between two trains.

Myanmar traditional boxing packs a punch, kick and headbutt

Hlaingbwe (Myanmar) (AFP) – A five-day traditional Lethwei tournament attracts a crowd of more than 1,000 people to watch the end of the tournament in Hlaingbwe township in Karen state. Among the winners of the day, 22-year-old Hlaing Htet Aung strutted victorious from the ring despite swelling on his face.
