Russia hits Ukraine with largest barrage of war after Putin-Trump call

Kiew (AFP) – Russia has launched its largest-ever drone and missile attack on Ukraine overnight, just hours after a telephone call between the US and Russian presidents ended without any breakthrough. Russian attacks have escalated as concerns mount in Kyiv over whether the US will continue delivering military aid, which is key to Ukraine’s ability to fend off the drone and missile barrages.

Canada turns to drones for reforestation after wildfires

Chibougamau (AFP) – A large aerial drone flies over the charred remains of Canadian forests devastated by wildfires, bombarding the ground with seed capsules to accelerate reforestation. This area of northern Quebec province was ravaged by megafires in the summer of 2023 and for the second year in a row a pilot project has been using drones to plant new black spruces and jack pines.

North Korea opens massive beach resort

Wonsan (AFP) – North Korea has opened a massive resort area on its east coast, according to state media, with the tourism pet project of leader Kim Jong Un reportedly set to welcome Russian guests later this month. The North last year permitted Russian tourists to return for the first time since the pandemic, and Western tour operators briefly returned in February this year. But given the limited capacity of available flights, international tourism to the new beach resort is “likely to remain small in scale,” according to Seoul’s unification ministry.

Indian Hindu pilgrimage begins in contested Kashmir

Srinagar (AFP) – Hindus begin a vast month-long pilgrimage in contested Indian Kashmir, with many of the faithful starting from near the site where a deadly April attack triggered a four-day conflict with Pakistan. It was the worst standoff by the nuclear-armed nations since 1999, with more than 70 people killed in missile, drone and artillery fire on both sides before a May 10 ceasefire.
