Alberta residents dig through ash and debris as Canada wildfires ease

Entwistle (Canada) (AFP) – After days of wildfire sweeping through their homes and businesses, residents of western Canada’s Alberta province can finally survey the damage. Around 110 fires were burning over the weekend, a figure that has dropped to 81, but an expected return of hot and dry conditions later this week has firefighters braced for more.

Ciudad Juárez (Mexico) (AFP) – Migrants wait ahead of the lifting of pandemic-era border Title 42 restrictions that have made claiming asylum at the border all but impossible. Inherited by President Joe Biden, the measure previously exempted asylum seekers from countries such as Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba. While the exemptions have already been rolled back, those nationalities still benefit from special asylum programs, such as through the CBP One mobile app.

Turmoil in junta-ruled Myanmar has dominated talks at this week’s Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Indonesia, as the regional bloc faces criticism for its perceived inaction.

Migrants rush to cross the border ahead of Title 42 lapse

Matamoros (Mexico) (AFP) – Migrants in Mexico, rush to cross into the United States, thinking they will not be able to enter after May 11, when the Title 42 law will be lifted. The measure was adopted under former president Donald Trump and allowed the Border Patrol to almost immediately expel border crossers back into Mexico or their origin countries without accepting their migration petitions. The Biden administration hopes a mix of incentives and punishments will prevent migrants from pushing across the border en masse after May 11.

EU chief hails ‘courageous’ Ukraine on Europe Day visit to Kyiv

Kyiv (Ukraine) (AFP) – “Ukraine is fighting for the ideals of Europe” says Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, while on a symbolic visit to Kyiv on May 9, to mark Europe Day. Speaking alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Von der Leyen accuses Russian President Vladimir Putin of “attempting to destroy” European values with his invasion of Ukraine.

Appiano Gentile (Italy) (AFP) – Inter Milan head coach Simone Inzaghi says his side’s Champions League semi-final against rivals AC Milan is more than just a regular derby: “it’s the derby”. The teams have, between them, been crowned European champions ten times and meet on Wednesday in their highest profile clash in two decades.

Germany warns China that ‘neutrality’ means siding with Russia

Berlin (AFP) – Germany’s foreign minister Annalena Baerbock warns her Chinese counterpart that “neutrality” in the Ukraine war amounts to taking Russia’s side, heaping pressure on Beijing to do more to end the conflict. “Neutrality means taking the side of the aggressor,” Baerbock says during a press conference in Berlin with China’s Qin Gang.

Illegal mining booms in Brazil’s ‘Promised Land’

Canaã dos Carajás (Brazil) (AFP) – Undercover and on high alert, Brazilian “garimpeiros” — or “prospectors” — seek to cash in on the country’s rich mineral reserves, digging for metals in Canaa dos Carajas. The region is home to an estimated 100 illegal mines, as well as the huge S11D iron-ore mine which has, since opening in 2016, tripled the size of the city of Canaa and made it the richest in Brazil in 2020.
