Search operations continue at site of deadly Indian bridge collapse

Morbi, Gujarat (India) (AFP) – Search and rescue workers probe the site of a pedestrian bridge collapse in the Indian state of Gujarat on Tuesday. At least 137 people died after the bridge collapsed on Sunday evening, sending hundreds tumbling into the river. Nine people were arrested on Monday in connection with the disaster.

German scientists glue themselves to the street in call for climate action

Munich (Germany) (AFP) – Scientists from the organisation Scientist Rebellion leave their labs early to take part in demonstrations across Germany, with some blocking a street in central Munich to call for more action on climate change. “We know this is happening, now we need to stop it before our entire planet collapses,” says one of the scientists at the demonstration.

Lula wins Brazil’s bitter presidential vote, Bolsonaro silent

Rio de Janeiro (AFP) – “Brazil is my priority! The people are my cause!” shouts Brazilian president-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva after narrowly winning a divisive runoff election Sunday, capping a remarkable political comeback by defeating far-right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro — who has yet to accept defeat. The victory marks a stunning turnaround for the charismatic but tarnished leftist heavyweight, who left office in 2010 as the most popular president in Brazilian history, fell into disgrace when he was imprisoned for 18 months on since-quashed corruption charges, and now returns for an unprecedented third term at age 77.

Cali (Colombia) (AFP) – More than 20 international delegations of dancers participate in the 17th edition of the World Salsa Festival in Cali, Colombia. The festival also offers open classes and activities to learn how to dance salsa. “To me, that’s life and that’s what I recommend to the whole world: dance salsa, don’t pay for a health plan.” says Andres Leudo, a Salsa instructor.
