Starship, the most powerful rocket ever built, exploded during its maiden flight on Thursday, but Elon Musk congratulated his SpaceX team on an “exciting” test of the spacecraft. The spacecraft failed to separate from the first-stage rocket booster and the rocket disintegrated in a ball of fire over the Gulf of Mexico.

Ancient necropolis unearthed next to busy Paris train station

Paris (AFP) – Just metres from a busy train station in the heart of Paris scientists have uncovered 50 tombs in an ancient necropolis south of Lutetia, the precursor to the French capital, with numerous burials and offerings. The discovery offers a rare insight into the Parisii, a Gallic tribe that lived on the banks of the River Seine during the Iron Age and the Roman period.

Crowds gather to watch Pacific total solar eclipse

Com (East Timor) (AFP) – Crowds gather in the Pacific region, including East Timor and Western Australia, to watch a total solar eclipse which plunged parts of the region into daytime darkness. “This phenomenon is very rare in East Timor” explains Flaviana Pinto Fernandes, head of the East Timor Meteorological Agency. One of those watching the event in Exmouth, Western Australia, is German enthusiast Michael Mushardt, who rescheduled his honeymoon to see the eclipse.

South Padre Island (United States) (AFP) – Getting along with your neighbors is important, and for the residents of South Padre Island, Texas, who live next door to Elon Musk’s SpaceX rocket company, this relationship seems largely positive. “It’s been great for so many job opportunities” says Paul Moses, the bartender of Coconut Jack’s. Another of those with a rosy view of Musk is Anthony Michael Sossi, who says “I absolutely think it’s badass, what he’s doing”. This week, SpaceX was forced to reschedule the launch of Starship, the biggest and most powerful rocket ever built, after a technical glitch caused the last minute cancellation of Monday’s lift-off.

Haaland an ‘incredible machine’ says Manchester City’s Guardiola

Munich (Germany) (AFP) – Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola hails Erling Haaland, describing the 22-year-old Norwegian as “an incredible machine”. Guardiola’s comments come after his side’s two-legged win over Bayern Munich, which sees them progress to the semi-final of the Champions League, where they will face the holders Real Madrid. Guardiola also addresses Haaland’s penalty miss, the first of his career. “Erling will learn… to take the ball, disappear, disappear, get out of the situation.”
