Haaland an ‘incredible machine’ says Manchester City’s Guardiola

Munich (Germany) (AFP) – Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola hails Erling Haaland, describing the 22-year-old Norwegian as “an incredible machine”. Guardiola’s comments come after his side’s two-legged win over Bayern Munich, which sees them progress to the semi-final of the Champions League, where they will face the holders Real Madrid. Guardiola also addresses Haaland’s penalty miss, the first of his career. “Erling will learn… to take the ball, disappear, disappear, get out of the situation.”

‘Profit from the coup’: Myanmar ethnic rebels welcome pro-democracy fighters

Shan State (Myanmar) (AFP) – The Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) is one of around a dozen ethnic rebel groups along the Myanmar-China border that have fought the military for decades over autonomy and control of lucrative resources. Since the coup in Myanmar two years ago, ethnic rebel groups have taken centre stage in the nationwide battle for democracy, clashing with junta troops and training anti-coup “People’s Defence Force” groups from the Bamar majority.

Russia’s human rights Sakharov Center shutters but refuses to go down

Cannes jury head Ruben Östlund vows ‘democratic’ film festival

Palma (Spain) (AFP) – Swedish director Ruben Östlund vows to keep his ego in check as jury head at the Cannes Film Festival, promising that newcomers will get the chance to make their mark alongside the big names. Östlund spoke to AFP in the garden of his townhouse on the Spanish island of Majorca about his excitement over leading the jury at the world’s most prestigious film festival next month.

Man City’s Guardiola wary of miracle comeback in Bayern tie

Munich (Germany) (AFP) – Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola insists that opponents Bayern Munich believe they can pull off a miracle and overturn a three-goal deficit against his side to reach the Champions League semi-finals. “I’ve been here at Bayern Munich and I know the mentality of this club. I know that they believe they can do it,” says Guardiola, who was head coach at Bayern from 2013 to 2016 before joining City.

Forest fires rage in Honduras

Tegucigalpa (AFP) – Fires rage in the forests of la Montanita in Honduras, turning trees to ash and blanketing the area in thick smoke. According to the Forest Conservation Institute (ICF), wildfires have resulted in more than 64,000 hectares of burnt forest so far this year.
