China says ‘long way to go’ after COP27 climate deal

Beijing (AFP) – Foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning says China – the world’s biggest polluter – welcomes a deal struck at the United Nations’ landmark COP27 climate summit in Egypt, but warns that there was still a “long way to go” for global cooperation in curbing rising temperatures.

Protest in Lima ahead of OAS mission visit to Peru

Lima (AFP) – Opponents of Peru President Pedro Castillo’s administration march towards the government palace in downtown Lima before being blocked by the police, a day ahead of a visit from the Organization of American States. Castillo, who is the subject of an unprecedented six open investigations into alleged corruption, asked for the body’s help in tackling the country’s financial crisis after accusing “the money sectors, the traditional politicians who have always thrived on corruption” of being behind a “coup” attempt against him.

North Korean TV shows images of missile launch

Pyongyang (AFP) – North Korean state TV shows images of a recent test launch for the Hwasong-17, Pyongyang’s newest intercontinental ballistic missile. Declaring he would meet perceived US nuclear threats with nukes of his own, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised the launch on Friday of the missile.

People pay respects at memorial for Colorado Springs shooting victims

Colorado Springs (AFP) – People gather at a makeshift memorial for the victims of the mass shooting at Club Q, an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs. At least five people were killed and 18 wounded in the mass shooting. The gunman who opened fire inside was stopped by two “heroic” people inside the club, police told a press conference earlier Sunday. IMAGES

‘I feel gay’ says Gianni Infantino at opening of Qatar 2022 World Cup

Doha (AFP) – I feel “Qatari”, “Arab”, “African”, “gay”: world football boss Gianni Infantino says in a bizarre attack on critics of Qatar’s human rights record on the eve of the opening of the football World Cup. He added: “Of course I am not Qatari, I am not an Arab, I am not African, I am not gay, I am not disabled. But I feel like it, because I know what it means to be discriminated [against], to be bullied, as a foreigner in a foreign country. As a child I was bullied – because I had red hair and freckles, plus I was Italian, so imagine.”
