Sudan’s Rastas fear new crackdown but vow to fight on

Khartoum (AFP) – Abdallah Ahmed and Saleh Abdalla have for years been enamoured with the Rastafari tradition which emerged in Jamaica last century. In their home country of Sudan, the community has largely lived underground under the autocratic rule of Omar al-Bashir, who was ousted in April 2019 following mass protests against his regime. Sudanese Rastafarians now say they are being targeted anew.

Netflix airs trailer of Harry and Meghan series

Washington (AFP) – Netflix unveils a long-awaited trailer for a six-part docuseries in which Prince Harry and his wife Meghan lift the lid on their lives in the royal family. The release of the trailer coincides with Harry’s elder brother William’s first trip to the United States as Prince of Wales and another race row within the family back home.

France’s Macron hails French baguettes’ UNESCO heritage status

Washington (AFP) – French President Emmanuel Macron hails the decision by UNESCO to give heritage status to the French baguette. “In these few centimeters of craftsmanship passed from hand to hand lies the spirit of French know-how,” the French president says in a speech to the French community at the French Embassy in Washington, DC.

Chinese mourners lay flowers outside Jiang Zemin’s former residence

Yangzhou (China) (AFP) – Chinese mourners lay flowers outside Jiang Zemin’s former residence in his hometown Yangzhou, near Shanghai, after the former leader died on Wednesday. State media said Jiang had died of leukaemia and multiple organ failure in Shanghai at the age of 96, and that funeral preparations had begun.

Khejarli (India) (AFP) – The Bishnois are India’s original eco-warriors, believing in the sanctity of all life, shunning meat and avoiding felling living trees. Spread mostly in hamlets across Rajasthan, the community draw inspiration from Amrita Devi, a Bishnoi woman killed in 1730 while trying to protect the khejari trees.

Thousands in Bangladesh cheer Argentina World Cup win

Dhaka (AFP) – As Argentina claimed a decisive 2-0 World Cup victory over Poland early Wednesday, thousands of fans were erupting in celebration thousands of kilometres away on a grassy field in Bangladesh. From young children to retirees, many clad in blue and white or waving Argentinian flags, the throng stood for nearly the entire match as they watched on giant screens in the main square of the capital’s Dhaka University.

Police out in force near hospital where Jiang Zemin rumoured to have died

Police patrol at the intersection near the hospital where former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin is rumoured to have died. Jiang died on Wednesday in Shanghai at the age of 96, state media reported, hailing him as a great communist revolutionary who helped quell the 1989 pro-democracy protests. IMAGES
