Ukraine curbs electricity use after Russian strikes

Kyiv (Ukraine) (AFP) – Ukraine has begun curbing electricity consumption as it races to repair infrastructure destroyed by Russian bombing as winter approaches. Energy-saving measures are being put in place across the country after Russian missile and drone strikes destroyed at least 30 percent of the country’s power stations in a week.

Citrouilleville attracts thousands of Canadians to celebrate Halloween

Japanese react to weakening yen after it falls to lowest since 1990

Tokyo (AFP) – Japan’s core consumer prices rose 3.0 percent in September on-year, the government said Friday, the highest level since 2014 as the falling yen and rising energy costs hit households hard. On Thursday, the yen weakened to 150 against the greenback, a level not seen since 1990.

Izyum races to rebuild and forget Russian occupation

Izyum (Ukraine) (AFP) – A team of workers in orange reflector vests has painted white lines on the road surface to indicate where it is safe to overtake. Five weeks after the recapture of the small but strategic town of Izyum in eastern Ukraine, a new battle for reconstruction is taking place. An army of construction machinery and builders is busy rebuilding what is left of the infrastructure and deleting as soon as possible any sign of Russian occupation.

Chad clashes: UN urges parties to ‘refrain from violence, excessive use of force’

Nations unies (Etats-Unis) (AFP) – SOUNDBITE The United Nations says it is “concerned” about the use of force against protesters in Chad after dozens of people died as demonstrations against the military’s grip on power turned violent. “We call on all parties to refrain from violence or excessive use of force,” Stéphane Dujarric, the spokesman for Secretary-General António Guterres, tells reporters.

London (AFP) – British Prime Minister Liz Truss announces her resignation just six weeks after taking office and says she will stay on as Prime minister until a successor is chosen to serve as Tory leader. The end for Truss comes after a key minister resigned and many Tory Members of Parliament rebelled over an important vote in chaotic scenes at the House of Commons late Wednesday.

Starmer calls for UK general election after Truss steps down

London (AFP) – After British Prime Minister Liz Truss’s resignation after a mere six weeks in office, the Leader of the opposition Labour Party Sir Keir Starmer attacks the “soap opera at the top of the Tory party” calls for an urgent general election “so the public can make their minds up about this utter chaos”. “That’s the choice now: a stable Labour government, or this utter chaos from the Conservatives,” he claims.
