Tuchel and Conte make light of heated Premier League flare-up

London (AFP) – ‘For me, it’s not a big deal,’ Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel says after he and Tottenham coach Antonio Conte were shown red cards for clashing twice during a heated 2-2 draw. Conte’s overexuberant celebrations of Spurs’ first equaliser resulted in the two coaches being booked for squaring up. Tuchel then responded by running down the touchline in celebration when Chelsea retook the lead through Reece James 13 minutes from time.

Rally in Kabul as Taliban mark first year in power

Kabul (AFP) – A crowd consisting of mostly Taliban militants attend a spontaneous rally at Kabul’s Shah Massoud square as the hardline Islamists marked the first anniversary of their return to power in the country with a national holiday. Exactly a year ago, the hardline Islamists captured Kabul after their nationwide lightning offensive against government forces ended 20 years of US-led military intervention. IMAGES

New hub opens for displaced Ukrainians from Kherson

Zaporizhzhia (Ukraine) (AFP) – A new support centre for internally displaced persons from the Kherson region in southern Ukraine opens in Zaporizhzhia, about 300 km northeast from Kherson. The centre, called “Ya – Kherson” (I am Kherson, in Ukrainian), has already received hundreds of people during the past week. In total, nearly 750 people have been evacuated from the Kherson region, seized by Moscow early on in their invasion, to Zaporizhzhia in the past 24 hours.

Pope urges help for drought-hit Somalia

Vatican City (AFP) – Pope Francis calls for international help for Somalia to fight a “deadly” drought that the UN says has displaced one million people. The 85-year-old pontiff drew attention to what he called the “serious humanitarian crisis” in Somalia and parts of surrounding countries after his weekly Angelus prayer at the Vatican.

Russian tourists to Finland greeted with Ukrainian anthem

Imatra (Finland) (AFP) – A crowd of people gathers in the Eastern Finnish city of Imatra on a bridge overlooking Imatrankoski rapids. At the same time every day, the river’s almost century-old dam is opened and water rushes under the bridge, to the sound of music. It is a popular attraction especially for Russian tourists. But since the end of July, the show has kicked off with the Ukrainian national anthem, to protest the Russian invasion.

Gaza zoo welcomes three newborn lion cubs

Gaza City (Palestinian Territories) (AFP) – Zookeepers assist a lioness in feeding its three newly-born lion cubs at Nama zoo in Gaza City, amid fears that they will die due to nutritional factors. The zoo’s staff took several precautionary measures to ensure that the cubs were safe once they were born. Each cub needs to be breastfed every hour.

Israeli security inspect bus after Jerusalem shooting

Jerusalem (AFP) – Israeli security inspect a bus after an attack outside Jerusalem’s Old City. Israeli police say they have arrested a suspect after a shooting attack on the bus in Jerusalem’s Old City that wounded eight people, two critically, including a pregnant woman.
