Police lead away protester in Shanghai

Shanghai (AFP) – In downtown Shanghai, people gathered in the streets on Sunday night to protest against the country’s zero-Covid policy. In China’s biggest metropolis, police tried to move people away from the site of an earlier demonstration on Wulumuqi street, named after the Mandarin for Urumqi, the capital of northwestern Xinjiang region. A deadly fire there last week has become a catalyst for public anger.

Thousands protest Turkish threats against Kurdish groups in Syria

Qamishli (Syria) (AFP) – Kurds in the Syrian Kurdish-majority city of Qamishli take to the streets to protest against Turkish threats against Kurdish groups in the country’s northeast. One week ago Turkey began a barrage of air strikes against Syria’s semi-autonomous Kurdish zones, and has also threatened a ground offensive in the region.

Zelensky vows to send grain to countries worst-hit by food crisis

Kyiv (Ukraine) (AFP) – At a press conference following the Grain from Ukraine summit in Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says his country is planning to send ships from Ukrainian ports to the countries “most affected by the food crisis and in need of assistance”.

Italian town strewn with mud after deadly Ischia landslide

Ischia (Italy) (AFP) – Mud and wreckage blights the southern island of Ischia after a deadly landslide swept through the small town of Casamicciola Terme. Italy’s government declared a state of emergency after the disaster killed at least one person and left a dozen missing.

Damaged cars scattered along Ischia’s seafront after landslide

Ischia (Italy) (AFP) – Ischia’s seafront lies covered in mud, debris and filled with damaged cars after a landslide caused by heavy rains on the Italian island, off Naples. Around a dozen people are still missing, according to Italy’s interior minister.
