Islanders watch lava from the Cumbre Vieja volcano light up the night sky

La Palma Island (Spain) (AFP) – The lives of thousands have been impacted by the trail of destruction caused by the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja island in La Palma which has been spewing lava and ash since September 19th. Clouds of thick ash have forced the closure of the island’s airport for the second time since the eruption, grounding flights as the island waits for the nightmare to end.

La Palma Island (Spain) (AFP) – The lava trail left by the Cumbre Vieja volcano in La Palma, the Canary Islands spills into the ocean to form a volcanic delta, as captured by researchers from the Spanish Geological and Mining Institute. Clouds of thick ash from the volcano on La Palma on Thursday forced the island’s airport to close for the second time since the eruption began last month, Spain’s airport authority says.

Venezuela reopens land border with Colombia after two years of clandestine crossings

Villa del Rosario (Colombia) (AFP) – Venezuelans react with joy as the bridge between the Venezuelan town of San Antonio de Tachira and Cucuta in Colombia reopens, after Caracas had unilaterally closed its land borders with Colombia in February 2019 amid a power struggle between President Nicolas Maduro and opposition leader Juan Guaido.

Tazacorte (Spain) (AFP) – When La Cumbre Vieja began erupting and sending burning lava across huge swathes of land on the western side of La Palma in Spain’s Canary Islands, thousands of people were forced to flee. Pensioners Margaretha and Luis were among those who had to leave their homes, and the couple are now taking refuge in their small boat in the port of Tazacorte until it is safe to return.

UK to hold probe into police ‘failures’

Manchester (United Kingdom) (AFP) – In a speech at the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester, British Home Secretary Priti Patel announces the launch of an inquiry “to know what systematic failures enabled his continued employment as a police officer” after former police officer Wayne Couzens was convicted for the rape and murder of Sarah Everard who he kidnapped in London. Patel also announces an expansion of drug testing and insists on measures to stop illegal immigration.

Damage and destruction following Cyclone Shaheen in Oman
