Spain’s Mar Menor lagoon ‘paradise’ spits out tonnes of dead fish

Murcia (Spain) (AFP) – Five tonnes of fish and crustaceans have washed ashore at Spain’s Mar Menor, once a lagoon paradise that is slowly dying from agricultural pollution. The sparkling saltwaters have spat out millions of dead or dying sea creatures on to sandy beaches which have long drawn tourists to the southeast.

Researchers discover world’s ‘northernmost’ island north of Greenland

oodaaq (Denmark) (AFP) – Scientists have discovered what is believed to be the world’s northernmost landmass — a yet-to-be-named island north of Greenland that could soon be swallowed up by seawaters. Researchers came upon the landmass on an expedition in July, and initially thought they had reached Oodaaq, up until now the northernmost island on the planet.

Humpback whales arrive at Colombia’s Pacific coast to mate

Bogota (AFP) – From July to October, humpback whales return to the warm tropical waters of Colombia’s Pacific coast where they were born, to start their mating ritual. According to recent studies, around 2,000 humpback whales arrive to the Colombian Pacific Ocean in one of the most impressive migration process of the animal world. Humpback whales are robust mammals, they measures can reach 16 metres, can weight up to 36 tonnes and swim up to 15 kilometres per hour.
