Water-dropping plane crashes in Turkey

Kahramanmaras (Turkey) (AFP) – Russia says all eight people onboard a Russian water-dropping plane died when it crashed in Turkey during a firefighting mission. Moscow’s defence ministry has said five Russian servicemen and three Turkish nationals were killed in the crash near the southern Turkish city of Adana.

World-first footage reveals secret life of a dingo

Fraser Island (Australia) (AFP) – A collar camera fitted to a dingo in Australia captures the dog’s life on Fraser Island, as part of efforts to track and prevent interactions between people and the wild dogs. From posing for snap-happy onlookers to scavenging on the pristine sand of the world heritage site off Queensland’s coast, the collar camera captured the daily life of the dog, also known as wongari, in close up detail for the first time, according to the Queensland Department of Environment and Science.

Rescuers search Russia lake after tourist helicopter crash

Kamchatka (Russia) (AFP) – Rescuers search Kuril Lake in Russia’s far east after a helicopter carrying 16 tourists and crew on a sightseeing trip crashed into the lake, leaving eight people feared dead and two others in serious condition. The Mi-8 helicopter crash-landed into the icy waters in the mountainous Kamchatka peninsula amid poor visibility and sank.

Cargo ship snaps in two off Japan coast

Hachinohe (Japan) (AFP) – A cargo ship has run aground and broken into two pieces off northern Japan, with the crew of the Panama-flagged vessel reportedly taken to safety. Aerial images show the separated stern of the Crimson Polaris tipped upwards and the other part of the stricken boat floating into the sea. A fuel leak from the ship has spread around 24 kilometres (15 miles) according to a coastguard spokesman and the extent of any environmental impact remains unclear.
