China clears memorial to victims of deadly car ramming attack

Zhuhai (China) (AFP) – Workers in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai removed flowers and candles early Wednesday from a makeshift memorial to 35 people killed when a man drove a car into a crowd in one of the country’s deadliest mass-casualty events in years.

Indonesia volcano catapults ash tower miles into sky

East Flores (Indonesia) (AFP) – Mount Lewotobi in eastern Indonesia erupts again, catapulting a tower of ash miles into the sky and forcing residents to evacuate to nearby shelters. Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, a 1,703-metre (5,587-foot) twin-peaked volcano on the tourist island of Flores, has erupted more than a dozen times this week, killing nine people after its initial burst on Monday.

Azerbaijan’s President rejects oil criticism in opening COP29 speech

Baku (AFP) – Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev defends his countries’ usage of oil and gas during his opening speech at the UN’s climate summit COP29 in the country’s capital Baku, arguing that every natural resource is “a gift of the God”. He says countries should not be “blamed” for having and selling their natural resources, adding that “the market needs them”.

Russia jails doctor for criticising Ukraine campaign during appointment

Moskau (AFP) – A Moscow court sentenced a paediatrician to five-and-a-half years in prison for criticising the Ukraine campaign during a private appointment, after she was denounced by the ex-wife of a soldier killed in combat. Nadezhda Buyanova, 68, was found guilty of spreading “fake” information on the Russian army, under legislation used to silence dissent. She protested her innocence throughout the trial.

Bees help tackle elephant-human conflict in Kenya

Voi (AFP) – Kenya’s growing elephant population and increasing human encroachment on their habitat is making a peaceful coexistence difficult. Now farmers in Taita-Taveta county, near Tsavo National Park, are protecting their crops with an innovative program by Save the Elephants charity – using African honeybees to deter the giant mammals who fear the tiny insect. “I think people are surprised how well they work, and it’s a nice nature-based solution as well,” says the project’s lead, Ewan Brenan.

Uranium mining town in Kyrgyzstan battles Soviet-era radioactive waste

Min-Kush (AFP) – With the nuclear disposal work entering its final stages, Min-Kush, a town in central Kyrgyzstan, hopes to move on soon from its radioactive past. Three decades on from Soviet independence, Kyrgyzstan is still dealing with the consequences of the nuclear arms race in the Cold War, when Central Asia provided the Soviet Union with all of its uranium. “We have good ideas for turning the village into a tourist base,” says Ilgiz Ernis, the town’s deputy mayor.

Paris (AFP) – Every day from Paris, Radio Erena broadcasts to the Eritrean diaspora but also directly to the inhabitants of this country in the Horn of Africa, a veritable information black hole. However, due to a lack of funding, the dissident radio station is threatened with closure after 15 years of existence. “It’s a collective mission, a mission of hope, we wanted to hear the voice of the public,” says the station’s editor-in-chief, Amanuel Ghimai Bhata.

Military continue to clean Spain flooding ground-zero as PM Sanchez announces additional aid

Paiporta (Spain) (AFP) – Members of Spain’s Emergency Military Unit (UME) work overnight to clean the streets of Paiporta, the area hardest hit on October 29 by Spain’s worst floods in generation. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announces fresh measures worth almost 3.8 billion euros to help stricken citizens recover from the disaster that killed 222 people.
